Frequently Asked Questions on Visas and Entry into Bolivia

The Consular Section of the Embassy of the Plurinational State of Bolivia in the Republic of Korea strongly recommends that applicants carefully review the following information before submitting a visa application, making any payment, purchasing airline tickets, or finalizing travel arrangements.

Visa requirements, procedures, and processing times may vary depending on the applicant’s nationality, visa category, and the specific circumstances of each case.

A. VISA EXEMPTION AND NATIONALITY

1. I am a foreign national residing in Korea. Does the visa exemption for Korean citizens also apply to me?

No.

Visa exemption is determined by the traveler’s nationality and the passport used for travel, not by the country of residence.

Foreign nationals holding temporary residence, permanent residence, or any other type of visa or residence permit in the Republic of Korea must verify the entry requirements applicable to their own nationality.

B. VISA APPLICATION AND CONSULAR APPOINTMENT

2. Are visa applications processed according to the applicant’s intended travel date?

No.
Visa applications are processed in the order in which they are received and reviewed, not according to the applicant’s intended date of travel.

Having an upcoming flight, hotel reservation, or imminent travel date does not grant priority to an application.

Applicants are therefore advised to begin the visa process sufficiently in advance.

3. What should I do after completing my online visa application?

Once the online visa application has been completed correctly, the applicant must contact the Embassy by email to request a date and time for the consular interview.

Submitting the online application does not automatically generate an appointment.

Applicants are advised to request an appointment at least one week in advance.

4. Is the online visa application form an electronic visa (eVisa)?

No.

The online visa application form is NOT an eVisa or electronic visa.

It is only the online Visa Application Affidavit/Sworn Declaration Form.

Completing and submitting the form:

  • does not mean that the visa has been approved;

  • does not replace the consular interview;

  • does not, by itself, authorize entry into Bolivia; and

  • does not mean that the visa procedure has been completed.

After submitting the online form, the applicant must complete all subsequent procedures established by the Consular Section.

5. May I visit the Embassy without an appointment?

No.

Applicants must first request a date and time for their consular interview, in accordance with the procedures established by the Consular Section.

Submitting an online visa application does not constitute an appointment.

6. Can the Embassy issue an urgent visa?

No.

The Consular Section does not issue urgent visas and does not process visa applications outside regular working hours.

Applications for tourism, employment, family-related travel, or other visa categories are NOT considered consular emergencies.

An imminent travel date does not alter the order of processing or the applicable processing times.

7. Where can I check public holidays and days on which the Consular Section is closed?

Before requesting an appointment or planning a visit to the Embassy, please consult the official website:

embolcorea.com

Updated information regarding public holidays, days without consular services, and other important notices is published on the website.

Applicants are advised to review this information before organizing their visa procedures.

C. CONSULAR OFFICE WHERE THE APPLICATION IS PROCESSED

8. If I apply for my visa in Seoul, may I receive it at another Bolivian Embassy or Consulate?

No.

The applicant must complete the visa procedure at the same Consular Office selected in the online application form.

If the visa application is submitted to the Embassy of Bolivia in Seoul, the applicant must attend the interview in Seoul and, if the visa is approved, complete the procedure and receive the visa in Seoul.

It is not possible to initiate an application at one Consular Office and subsequently request that it be processed or issued by another office.

9. What happens if I select the wrong Consular Office on the application form?

Before submitting the application, applicants must carefully verify that the correct Consular Office has been selected.

For example, it is not possible to select Beijing on the application form and later request that the visa be processed or issued in Seoul.

Applicants intending to complete the procedure through the Embassy of Bolivia in the Republic of Korea must correctly select SEOUL as the Consular Office.

An incorrect selection of the Consular Office may require the applicant to begin the application process again.

10. I live in a country where Bolivia has no Embassy or Consulate. How can I apply for a visa?

If you reside in a country where Bolivia does not have an Embassy or Consulate and, based on your nationality, you require a visa to enter Bolivia, you must nevertheless complete the visa procedure in person before a Bolivian diplomatic or consular mission.

You may apply at the Embassy or Consulate of Bolivia that is closest to your country of residence or at another Bolivian Consular Office that is more convenient for you, provided that the office concerned is able to process the relevant visa category.

Before completing the online application, applicants are advised to contact the selected Consular Office in advance to confirm:

  • whether the office can receive and process the application;

  • the requirements applicable to the applicant’s nationality;

  • the appointment procedure; and

  • the estimated processing time.

The absence of a Bolivian diplomatic or consular mission in the applicant’s country of residence does not exempt the applicant from the requirement to appear in person before a Bolivian Consular Office.

The Consular Office selected in the online application must be the same office where the applicant will attend the interview and complete the visa procedure.

D. PERSONAL APPLICATIONS, TRAVEL AGENCIES, AND PASSPORTS

11. May another person submit my visa application on my behalf?

No.

Visa applications are strictly personal.

Representatives, agents, family members, attorneys-in-fact, intermediaries, or other third parties are not accepted for the purpose of completing the visa procedure on behalf of an applicant.

12. Can I obtain my visa through a travel agency?

No.

The Consular Section does not issue visas through travel agencies, agents, or other intermediaries.

The use of a third-party service does not grant priority, preferential treatment, or any guarantee that a visa will be approved.

13. May I send or receive my passport by courier or mail?

No.

The Consular Section does not receive or return passports by courier, delivery service, postal mail, or through other intermediaries.

Procedures involving the applicant’s passport must be completed personally, in accordance with the instructions of the Consular Section.

14. May another person complete my visa application form for me?

The visa application form constitutes a Sworn Declaration/Affidavit.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to personally complete the application and provide true, complete, and accurate information.

The applicant is responsible for all information declared in the application form.

E. DOCUMENTATION AND APPLICATION FORM

15. Must the documents presented at the interview be the same as those uploaded to the online application?

Yes.

All documents presented during the interview must be exactly the same documents previously uploaded to the online visa application.

Applicants should not upload one document and subsequently present a different document at the interview, unless the Consular Section expressly requests additional or replacement documentation.

16. Must the documents be originals?

Yes.

All required documents must be presented in original form.

Photocopies are not accepted as substitutes for required original documents.

17. In what language must the documents be submitted?

Documents must be issued or presented in Spanish or English.

Documents issued in another language must be submitted with the corresponding translation and notarization, in accordance with the applicable requirements.

18. What should I check before submitting my application form?

Before finalizing the application, applicants must ensure that they:

  • select the correct visa category;

  • select the correct Consular Office;

  • enter their given names and surnames exactly as they appear in the passport;

  • verify spelling and spacing;

  • enter the passport number correctly;

  • verify nationality and all other personal information;

  • correctly upload all required documents; and

  • ensure that all uploaded documents are legible and correspond to the visa category being requested.

19. What happens if I make an error in my application?

Certain errors in an application that has already been submitted cannot subsequently be corrected by the Consular Section.

Errors in personal information, visa category, selected Consular Office, or supporting documentation may prevent the application from proceeding or may result in its refusal.

In such cases, the applicant must begin the entire application procedure again from the beginning.

20. Is the visa application fee refundable?

No.

The fee paid for a visa application is non-refundable under all circumstances.

This includes, but is not limited to, situations in which:

  • the application contains errors;

  • the wrong visa category was selected;

  • a new application must be submitted;

  • the applicant decides not to continue with the procedure; or

  • the visa is not approved.

Each new application requires payment of the corresponding fee.

Applicants are therefore strongly advised to review all information carefully before submitting the application and making payment.

F. PHOTOGRAPH AND PERSONAL INFORMATION

21. What are the most common problems identified in visa applications?

Common issues include:

  • photographs that do not meet the required specifications; and

  • errors in the spelling or spacing of given names and surnames.

General photograph requirements

The photograph must:

  • have a white background;

  • be clear and allow the applicant to be easily identified;

  • have been taken within the previous six months;

  • measure 4 × 4 cm; and

  • clearly show both shoulders.

Given names and surnames

The applicant’s given names, surnames, spelling, and spacing in the application form must match the information shown in the passport exactly.

G. ACCOMMODATION AND LETTERS OF INVITATION

22. What should I submit if I have a hotel reservation?

Applicants must upload the relevant accommodation documentation with the visa application and present the same document during the consular interview.

23. What should I submit if I do not have a hotel reservation because I will stay with relatives or friends?

If the applicant will stay with relatives, friends, or another person legally residing in Bolivia and therefore does not have a hotel reservation, a Letter of Invitation must be submitted.

For visa applications for tourism purposes, the Letter of Invitation must be processed through the Bolivian General Directorate of Migration (DIGEMIG) in accordance with the applicable procedure.

An informal invitation letter prepared solely by a relative or friend does not replace the document required by the immigration authority.

24. Must the Letter of Invitation also be uploaded with the online application?

Yes.

The corresponding Letter of Invitation must be uploaded with the online visa application, and the same original document must be presented during the consular interview.

H. APPLICATIONS FOR MINORS UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE

25. How must a minor apply for a visa

Applicants under 18 years of age must complete the visa procedure with both parents.

The minor and both parents must appear on the same day for the consular interview.

All other requirements applicable to the requested visa category must also be fulfilled.

26. Does a minor require a travel authorization?

Yes, in certain circumstances.

If a person under 18 years of age travels:

  • alone;

  • accompanied by only one parent;

  • with a legal guardian;

  • with another relative; or

  • with a third party,

the applicant must additionally submit a travel authorization for Bolivia, duly notarized and translated into Spanish.

27. What financial document may be submitted for a minor who does not have a bank account?

If the minor does not have a bank account in his or her own name, the applicant must submit a bank balance certificate belonging to the parent or legal guardian, together with documentation establishing the relevant family or legal relationship.

All documents must comply with the applicable language and documentary requirements.

I. NATIONALITY GROUPS AND PROCESSING TIMES

28. Are the requirements the same for all applicants?

No.

Although general requirements exist for each visa category, every application is assessed individually.

Requirements and procedures may vary according to:

  • the applicant’s nationality;

  • the nationality group applicable to the applicant;

  • the visa category;

  • the purpose of travel;

  • the documentation submitted; and

  • the individual circumstances of the case.

The consular authority may request additional documents or information whenever deemed necessary.

29. Do Group 2 and Group 3 applicants follow the same procedure?

No.

Applicants classified under Group 3 may be subject to requirements and procedures that differ from those applicable to Group 2 applicants.

Before beginning the visa process, applicants must verify the group applicable to their nationality.

30. How long does visa processing take for Group 2 applicants?

For Group 2 applicants, the estimated processing time is approximately 5 business days from the date of the consular interview, provided that:

  • all required documentation is complete;

  • there are no observations or deficiencies;

  • no additional documents are required; and

  • there are no circumstances requiring further review.

Processing times may vary depending on the season and the volume of applications received.

31. How long does visa processing take for Group 3 applicants?

For Group 3 applicants, the estimated processing time is generally 10 to 15 business days.

These applications require authorization from Bolivia, and processing times may therefore vary depending on the individual case.

Applicants are strongly advised to begin the procedure sufficiently in advance.

32. Does the processing period begin when I submit the online application?

No.

Estimated processing times are calculated from the date of the consular interview and the submission of complete and correct documentation, provided that no observations or additional requirements arise.

Submitting the online form alone does not mean that the visa processing period has begun.

J. APPROVAL, REFUSAL, AND SUBSEQUENT APPLICATIONS

33. If I meet all the requirements, is the issuance of my visa guaranteed?

No.

Published requirements constitute the general documentary requirements for the receipt and assessment of a visa application.

Each application is assessed individually.

Submission of all required documents does not guarantee approval of the visa.

The competent consular authority makes the final decision regarding whether a visa will be issued.

34. May the consular authority request additional documents?

Yes.

Depending on the circumstances of each individual case, the consular authority may request additional documentation, information, clarification, or verification before making a final decision.

35. Can the Embassy guarantee that I will receive my visa before my intended travel date?

No.

The purchase of airline tickets, accommodation reservations, or other travel arrangements does not guarantee that a visa will be issued before a specific date.

The applicant’s intended travel date does not change the order of processing or the applicable processing times.

36. I previously obtained a Bolivian visa. Does this guarantee that I will receive another visa?

No.

Having previously obtained a Bolivian visa does not guarantee automatic renewal or approval of a subsequent application.

Each new application is assessed independently and according to the circumstances applicable at the time of submission.

The applicant must submit a new visa application together with updated supporting documentation and must once again comply with all requirements applicable to the relevant visa category.

A previous Bolivian visa may form part of the applicant’s immigration history, but it does not constitute a guarantee of approval.

K. EMPLOYMENT VISAS AND VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES

37. Is there a specific visa category for volunteers?

The Consular Section does not process a separate visa category specifically designated as a “Volunteer Visa.”

Persons intending to enter Bolivia for volunteer activities must apply, depending on the nature, duration, and characteristics of the activity, for a Specific Purpose Visa for Employment or a Temporary Work Visa, as applicable.

Applicants are advised to verify the correct visa category before completing the application and making payment.

L. RESIDENCE, PERMANENT STAY, AND NATURALIZATION

38. Does the Consular Section grant temporary or permanent residence in Bolivia?

No.

The Consular Section of the Embassy does not grant temporary or permanent residence in Bolivia.

Such immigration procedures must be carried out directly in Bolivia before the General Directorate of Migration (DIGEMIG), in accordance with applicable Bolivian regulations.

39. Can I apply for Bolivian naturalization through the Consular Section?

No.

The Consular Section does not process applications for naturalization.

The relevant procedures must be carried out directly in Bolivia before the competent Bolivian authorities.

M. YELLOW FEVER VACCINATION CERTIFICATE

40. Do I need a yellow fever vaccination certificate to travel to Bolivia?

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required when the traveler intends to visit areas of Bolivia with a risk of yellow fever transmission.

The requirement therefore depends on the regions included in the traveler’s itinerary.

Travelers are advised to verify in advance whether the areas they intend to visit are considered risk areas.

41. If I am traveling only to the Salar de Uyuni, do I need a yellow fever vaccination certificate?

If your itinerary is limited exclusively to the Salar de Uyuni, a yellow fever vaccination certificate is not required solely on the basis of that destination.

However, if you already hold an international yellow fever vaccination certificate, it is advisable to carry it with you during your trip, particularly if your itinerary may later change to include other regions of Bolivia.

If your travel plans include destinations in addition to the Salar de Uyuni, you should verify whether those areas are classified as yellow fever risk areas.

N. RECOMMENDATIONS BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION

42. What should I verify before submitting and paying for my visa application?

Before finalizing the visa procedure, applicants should carefully verify:

  • whether their nationality requires a visa for the intended purpose of travel;

  • the nationality group applicable to them;

  • the correct visa category;

  • that SEOUL has been selected if the application will be processed through the Embassy of Bolivia in the Republic of Korea;

  • that given names and surnames are entered exactly as they appear in the passport;

  • that the passport number and all other personal information are correct;

  • that the photograph complies with the applicable requirements;

  • that all required documents have been uploaded;

  • that the documents uploaded are the same original documents that will be presented during the interview;

  • that all documents are in Spanish or English or, where applicable, have been duly translated and notarized;

  • that the applicant has the appropriate hotel reservation or Letter of Invitation, as applicable;

  • whether the planned itinerary requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate;

  • that public holidays and days without consular services have been reviewed; and

  • that sufficient time has been allowed to complete the procedure before the intended travel date.

Applicants should carefully review all information before submitting and paying for the application. Errors may require a new application to be submitted and a new fee to be paid.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

The information provided in this section is general and for guidance purposes.

Each visa application is assessed individually in accordance with the applicant’s nationality, visa category, purpose of travel, supporting documentation, and applicable regulations.

The Consular Section may request additional information or documentation whenever necessary.

Submission of an application, payment of the consular fee, or the fact that an applicant has previously obtained a Bolivian visa does not guarantee the issuance of a new visa. The final decision rests with the competent consular authority.

Applications for tourism, employment, family-related travel, or other visa categories are not considered consular emergencies, and urgent visas are not issued outside regular consular service hours.

For updated requirements, public holidays, days without consular services, office hours, and official consular notices, please regularly consult the Embassy’s official website:
